I just took a four day vacation with the Gavino family to Baguio City. It was a peaceful, restful and no stress weekend with family and friends, Vlad and Teresa Reyes. JL, Joey and myself left early Friday morning at 3 am and got to the Pine City at 7 am, that was fast since there was no traffic and we took the new Tarlac-Subic Expressway. Got there just in time for breakfast with Kuya Titong, Ate Cynthia and Sarah who got their four days before us. After breakfast, took a long nap since there was very little sleep for us before the trip. After which, picked up Vlad and Teresa in the Victory Liner Stop, they took the premium airconditioned bus that I took last year when I did a demo in Baguio with the whole USDA team. I noticed that the city is really getting polluted with such a big number of jeeps, tricycles and buses going around the city, it was just normal to have a city that smells this way. That’s the reason I love staying in Baguio Country Club since I do feel the old Baguio here with all the pine trees, blooming flowers – they have milflores all over the driveway and all the good comfort stuffs that make it our vacation destination years ago. I realized there is not that much good restaurants to eat here or I was just too lazy to go around….What’s new that I got to see there….here’s a list:

Kulangot – this is my favorite comfort Baguio food since it reminds me of my childhood stay there. Gooey, slimy stuffs inside a round object that sealed with a red crepe paper. Cut one of the sticks from the stack and you get a spoon to further help in releasing the sweet, brown good stuff…hahaha..

Don’t you just love the colors of the everlasting flower, it amazes me how beautiful this flower is and as it dries brings out a different hue.

Sagada Oranges – juicy, sweet, seedless and heavenly. Better than Sunkist and according to the tindera, it’s organic, it was so good, I forgot that too much was bad for me.

La Trinidad Strawberries – there are sweet this time of the year, although still expensive but the color is appetizing so even if you are not planning to get, you still buy. The hard part is the Manila arrival when it is all sweaty and tired.

Baguio Market Kakanin – there’s an area near the dry goods section where they sell blankets and Ifugao costumes, here they have extra ordinary kakanin, one in particular is only sold during this time, I think it is called Supsuman, a rice cake made with black pinipig which you only see this time of the year. Another is a muscovado sweet cooked coconut topped rice cake, that just had enough sugar. Enjoyed it so much I had to go back to have it the next day.

Romana’s Peanut Brittle – how can you not forget another comfort snack but there is a new one in the market Good Shepherd’s Cashew Crunch, less sweet and a lot of flavors. There are tons of new stuffs in Good Shepherd but some I think are old already and just excited me when I saw them. Make sure to get the following when you go to Baguio – Good Shepherd’s Adobo Peanuts without balat, Alfahor, Ube Jam, SugarFree Blueberry Jam, Santol Preserve, Cashew Crunch, Snowballls and a lot more. Go early, better the first day you arrive, tons of people go and buy and at times, there’s nothing else to buy.

PKNY Café – has a bed and breakfast that’s cute and everything is for sale except the guest. Got some lumpy, grainy type of ube there will let you know if it is good.

Tantamco’s Ube – another favorite comfort food….there are new sizes to follow everyone’s budget.

Of course, who will not leave Baguio without the Country Club’s Raisin Bread and Banana Bread, these two by the way with the alfahor were my pasalubong for everyone here in Manila.

Do you remember our stay there ages and ages ago?! Baguio Country Club was the only place at that time that I was able to eat rice with 2 eggs and different viands everyday for breakfast and finished it! My mom was so happy for me because I can hardly finish my food in Manila! Yup i remember all the comfort food you listed! But up to this day, i still haven’t tried the kulangot!!!
