You want my recipe of what?!

It’s not my problem! Most of the people I give my recipes to, this is their problem. But I am very sure there are a number of you out there with the same predicament. What’s the best to do?
I wrote about this two years ago in my Manila Bulletin column and I wanted to reissue it again for all of you reading my blog….not the same article; written differently this time.
I used to make tiramisu 12 years ago and I made a killing with it. Everyone who tasted and savored it wanted the recipe but how could I make money? Anyway, to all of you read on….
So what to do when they ask for the recipe of what you just cooked or baked?
Best answer, winning the “ Family Feud “ is say this politely, “ Can I just cook or bake that for you? Or you know I accept orders for what you just had. It’s very diplomatic, no emotions and fear when said. I had an aunt who I said this too and up until last year, she was still ordering the same lasagna every two months, but she has respected my answer. Or you could say “yes” but never give it. After some time they forget or they just get it. Sometimes people don’t realize how personal, recipes are. Food is such a part of life, it makes people happy and famous, it is just right that recognition is given to the proper source. But what do you do when they keep on asking for it? Give them a recipe that is not real one or maybe one that is almost the same. Just be ready with the all shouting when it doesn’t work or it doesn’t even resemble what they were asking for. One more solution is by explaining to them that it was just something you mixed, no ingredient was measured but still mention what the ingredients were and procedure done. You can mention the source of the recipe, last month’s issue of “Delicious” or Archie’s comics…
Those people who are brave enough to ask are the ones who know how to cook but can’t seem to decipher what technique or special ingredient was used. They can’t distinguish a spice that was used since they still lack taste buds skills and ingredient exposure. When you give out a recipe, make the procedure very general.
Recipes for me are gifts, created for a reason to feed special people in our lives. It’s still a choice at end, whether one should give it or not, for whatever purpose they have it will always be a risk. If the sincerity of helping is there, you will gifted with a lot more. I have received so much, that’s why I give more.
